Si Fu graduated Bachelor of Social Communication from the University of Communication Helio Alonso in 1991, and post-graduated in Marketing from the School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM) in 1993. He was a publicist, and started his career in 1987 as Junior Editor, reaching the position of Creative Director in 1991, having accumulated several awards over ten years.
However, there is a Latin word "VOCATIO" which means "A calling", hence the idea of "Vocation". And it was precisely this vocation that led Si Fu to begin his transmission process of the Ving Tsun System as early as 1993, and on August 1, 1995, to get the keys from the Jacarepagua School, which was located on Tindiba Road(West Zone): " ... I answered the phone and my uncle asked: 'Julio, weren't you looking for a room? I found one!'. I went there, the Portuguese owner gave me the keys and suddenly I had an empty room , a key in my hand and a rent to pay in thirty days. " - Si Fu would have said to me while eating a soup at Uncle Frank Restaurant in the neighboring neighborhood in the late 2000s."
Some of the furniture in that first place was taken from his mother's house, others according to Si Suk Ursula, Si Fu saw that they were being donated, refurbished and taken away to put in Mo Gun. In other cases, he would buy himself: "... There was a period when I was still accumulating a job other than Mo Gun, and sometimes I didn't have time to go out of work, have dinner and get on time for the classes at the Ving Tsun School. So I ate in the car on the way using a tupperware where was my food. " - Si Fu said - "I often didn't have lunch, to save money to buy things for Mo Gun. Like the fan." - Concluded.
And his mother, Mrs. Vera Camacho, gave him a gift: The mirrors that we see in the background, because she thought Si Fu had few students, and the mirror would make seem to have more.
From 1997, when Si Fu began attending the US, he also began to develop his relationship with Si Taai Gung Moy Yat. And on one of these visits, alone with him at Mo Gun, Si Taai Gung himself asked him if he wanted him to make a seal in stone. Si Fu said yes. Si Taai Gung then asked, "What's the name of your school?" - Si Fu answered "Jacarepaguá". Si Taai Gung would have said, "Too complicated!" - Telling this story laughing, Si Fu said he received a seal in which his school became "Rio". - In his own words: "Importantly, there was never Tindiba Road School and Nucleo. It was always Jacarepaguá School."
This first School that Si Fu ran was not always in the same room within the same building: "In front there were two small rooms (we were for three years at 202) and later we moved to (203), which was twice the size and We stayed for a year before we moved to the whole floor at Av. Nelson Cardoso. "
In the same photo we see three iconic objects:
1) The painting by Ip Man: Si Fu received this painting from the author, Patriarch Moy Yat. Si Fu has a legendary lucky to win prizes that continues to this day.
2) The fax machine: In times of high adventures, a telephone line in Rio de Janeiro could reach 2,000.00 USD. So it was very challenging to buy Si Fu's first school´s Telephone Line and fax machine. Since a Telephone Line with that value, was considered patrimony.
3) Finally, we have the handwritten canvas by Patriarch Moy Yat during his visit to this place.
On August 1, 1995, the Jacarepaguá school was founded, with the express permission of Grandmaster Leo Imamura. It was established at 602 building in Tindiba Road in the city of Rio de Janeiro. On September 16 of that same year, Moy Yat Sang Family leaders cut the red ribbon at the official opening.
Three years later, due to the need for expansion, the School moved from the same building to another room, with the presence of Patriarch Moy Yat in person, alongside Grandmaster Leo Imamura and Vanise Imamura.
Si Gung used to suggest that appropriate canvas and materials be left so that Si Taai Gung Moy Yat could present the place with his handwriting. According to Si Fu, when Si Taa Gung was back a few years later at the Nelson Cardoso Avenue School, he had been happy to see the painting on display.
On this visit at the new address, Si Taai Gung made a new calligraphy. Look in the background at the fax machine that Si Fu wouldn't let me dispose of for years in Barra da Tijuca's first address years later.
Today the same picture occupies a prominent place in the Mo Gun of my Kung Fu Family. How amazing is that, right? I received this from Si Fu on my 2016 birthday, when I was already Si Fu myself. Really for me, to this day I am still processing this gift because of its importance.
In those days, lost in time, Si Fu was very excited one night with the lecture he would give. He had prepared and left his other job in a hurry to get to the School. Arriving there were only Si Suk Ursula and Si Suk Vagner. Si Fu said he was very frustrated to see that "Only they two were there":
"... Ursula said to me: Si Hing, don't you want instead to focus on the people who didn't come, to focus on the two of us who came? ... "- Si Fu said he immediately pu himself together again and gave the lecture.
Years later, Si Fu gave a lecture at an Exoteric Order at Cachambi in Rio de Janeiro. In this opportunity, I could help him. Contrary to previous history, the house was packed, but of nearly twenty people, it was only one then young student from Tamandaré College who sat in the back row, who began his practice and would later become one of the Directors of the Barra da Tijuca School: Guilherme de Farias This being one of the many developments of the first School in Tindiba Road.
- Me contou Si Fu.
Although Ving Tsun is an art with its foundation attributed to a woman, Si Suk Ursula Lima has long been the only female practitioner. - "Sometimes Ursula complained that they had no other women, then one day she appeared to Monique. I said: 'Ursula, the day the school has three female practtioners, will never be just you again.' ..." - Si Fu told me. In the following years, names like Ines Braconnot and Nandinha Neves would join Si Suk Ursula and Monique at this and the following address.
Si Fu when he was younger was even more look alike his daughter Jade. In those years, exactly in 1998, was recognized by the institution's summit as Highlight of the Year, among the school directors of the so-called "Moy Yat Ving Tsun Martial Art System". This was crowned the following year, when he received the same honor, but as Highlight of the 1995-1999 Period.
We can say that in those years when Si Fu was directly ahead of the School, the performance of the Jacarepaguá School was always at the top.
Obrigado, Si Fu.
On August 1, 2019, it was twenty-four years later that a man's decision would change the lives of countless people. And this was Si Fu's statement when I was admitted to the Kung Fu Family: "I hope it's not by chance." - I never forgot that phrase, and perhaps by then he knew his own entry into the Family was no accident.
Si Fu wrote in his book "Tao do Surf - Zen and the Art of Crashing" that: "You will never know why you dedicated so much of your life to a dream. Until the day this dream saves your life."
I wonder what happens when we change the phrase to: "You will never know why you dedicated so much of your life to a dream until the day that dream saves many lives."
Thank you, Si Fu.
